What's Included

Our Land Rover coolant service starts with a pressure test of the cooling system before we drain anything — this identifies any existing leaks at the thermostat housing, coolant reservoir, hoses, or water pump before we proceed. We then perform a complete flush, removing all residual fluid. This step is critical: Land Rover's OAT coolant is chemically incompatible with the green silicated coolant commonly sold at parts stores, and a thorough flush prevents any reaction between residual fluid and the new coolant. We refill with the correct JLR-spec OAT coolant (STJLR.03.5100 for V8 applications, model-specific for Ingenium) at the correct 50/50 dilution for the Simi Valley climate. We then perform a second pressure test with new fluid to confirm no leaks, and road test the vehicle to verify operating temperature and heater output.

Components We Inspect

During every coolant service, our technicians visually inspect the thermostat housing for cracks (a common failure on the AJ-V8 — the plastic housing fatigues from thermal cycling), the coolant reservoir for signs of cracking or seeping at the seams, all coolant hoses for bulging, cracking, or soft spots, the radiator for signs of corrosion or leaking at the end tanks, the water pump for bearing noise or weeping at the seal, and the heater core inlet/outlet hoses for signs of coolant residue (indicating a slow internal heater core leak). If we find anything worth noting, we document it with photos and give you a written estimate — there's no obligation to proceed with additional repairs on the same visit.

Head Gasket Check

On any coolant service where the customer reports overheating history, repeated coolant loss, or white exhaust smoke on a warm engine, we perform a combustion gas test (block test) as part of the service. This test checks for combustion gases in the coolant — a reliable early indicator of head gasket compromise before a full gasket failure occurs. The block test takes about 15 minutes and is included at no additional charge when there's a history of overheating. If the test comes back positive, we'll discuss the next diagnostic steps (typically a compression test and cylinder leakdown test) before recommending a head gasket replacement.
