Why the Correct Oil Matters
JLR's 5.0L V8 supercharged engine — the one in the L405 Range Rover and L494 Range Rover Sport — uses a chain-driven variable valve timing system that requires the correct oil pressure and viscosity to operate its cam phasers correctly. Using a heavier-than-specified oil (5W-30 where 0W-20 is required) causes sluggish phaser response and can trigger cam timing fault codes. Using a lighter oil in a hot climate like Simi Valley accelerates wear on the bearing surfaces that depend on an adequate oil film at high temperature. The correct spec balances cold-start flow for the phaser system and hot-temperature film strength for the bearings — that balance only exists within the specified grade.
Oil Change Intervals
JLR specifies annual or mileage-based intervals depending on the model and model year. The 5.0L V8 is rated for up to 16,000 miles between changes under ideal conditions. We recommend 8,000–10,000 mile intervals for Simi Valley driving — the combination of hot ambient temperatures, stop-and-go traffic on the 118 and 23, and the occasional load or towing use that many Land Rover owners engage in creates conditions harder on oil than the European test cycle that JLR's specifications are based on. For the 4.4L AJ-V8 in daily driving use, 7,500–8,000 miles is our recommendation. The turbocharged Ingenium 2.0L benefits from a 6,000–7,500 mile interval given the thermal stress turbos place on oil.
What's Included in Our Oil Service
Our Land Rover oil service includes drain and fill with the correct JLR-spec oil to the correct level, a new OEM-spec oil filter, a check of all fluid levels (coolant, brake fluid, power steering, transfer case if accessible), a visual inspection under the vehicle for oil leaks or other obvious issues, a tire pressure check and adjustment, and a fault code scan. We reset the service indicator after completing the service. The whole process takes 45–60 minutes. No upsell pressure — if we see something worth noting (like an oil cooler line seep on an L322), we document it and show you, but there's no obligation.
