Coolant Specification Matters

Every Land Rover model has a specific coolant specification — and mixing the wrong coolant type is one of the most damaging things an owner can do. The AJ-V8 engines (L322, LR3, LR4, L320) require a silicate-free, phosphate-free coolant that meets JLR specification STJLR.03.5100 (OAT-type, orange or pink in color). The Ingenium 4-cylinder engines in the Evoque, Velar, and Freelander require a HOAT or OAT coolant per JLR specification. Using the green silicated coolant commonly sold at auto parts stores is chemically incompatible with Land Rover's aluminum components and can accelerate corrosion, clog the heater core, and attack seal materials. When we flush a system, we always flush completely before refilling — any residual incompatible coolant can cause reactions with the replacement fluid.

Thermostat Housing Failures

Part Reference: Evoque Thermostat Housing

The Evoque L538 with the 2.0L Si4 engine uses thermostat housing part LR006957 (may vary by model year). This is a known wear item on higher-mileage examples, especially in climates with significant temperature swings. If you see coolant under the front of the engine or smell antifreeze inside the cabin with the heat running, the thermostat housing is the first place to check.

Overheating Emergency Protocol

If your Land Rover temperature gauge climbs above its normal position while driving: turn off the A/C, turn on the heater to full heat (this dumps heat from the coolant into the cabin), and pull over and shut the engine off as soon as it's safe to do so. Do not remove the radiator cap on a hot engine. Do not add cold water to a hot engine (thermal shock can crack the block). Let the vehicle cool for at least 30 minutes before checking the coolant level. Call us at (805) 624-7576 — if you're in Simi Valley or nearby, we can often advise over the phone on whether the vehicle is drivable or should be towed.
