Range Rover Sport — Generation Guide

The Range Rover Sport is the performance-oriented sibling to the flagship Range Rover. Three generations, three platform changes, and a consistent focus on on-road dynamics without sacrificing off-road capability. Each generation has a distinct set of maintenance priorities — here's what you need to know about all three.

L320 Range Rover Sport (2005–2013)

The L320 shares its T5 platform with the LR3/Discovery 3 — a body-on-frame ladder chassis with independent air suspension at all four corners. Engine options: 4.2L supercharged V8 (2005–2009), 4.4L AJ-V8 (2006–2009), and the 5.0L supercharged V8 (2010–2013). The 5.0L supercharged variant is the most desirable L320 for performance, but carries the highest running costs.

L320 pre-purchase priority: ACE system function test (listen for pump at startup — should be quiet). Air suspension compressor run time. Timing chain rattle on cold start. All three issues are manageable when caught early; all three become expensive when they aren't.

L494 Range Rover Sport (2014–2022)

The L494 moved to the L405 Range Rover's platform — the lightweight aluminum architecture. This brings the same structural advantages (weight reduction, corrosion resistance) and the same structural repair costs (specialized aluminum repair only). The L494 is a more refined vehicle than the L320 in every measurable way, with meaningfully improved reliability.

Transfer case and rear differential service on the L494 is often deferred because it's not on most service reminders. ZF 8HP transfer case fluid at 60,000 miles (ZF Lifeguard 8 spec), rear differential fluid at the same interval. Skipping these is the leading cause of premature drivetrain wear on L494s that otherwise have good oil service records.

L461 Range Rover Sport (2023+)

The L461 shares the MLA-Flex platform with the L460 Range Rover and the L663 Defender. Powertrain options include the Ingenium I6 P360/P400 mild hybrid and the P510e plug-in hybrid. The Dynamic HST variant uses the BMW-sourced 4.4L twin-turbo V8 (P530).

Insufficient mileage data exists to establish the L461's long-term reliability pattern. Early ownership reports are consistent with the L460 Range Rover — generally positive with the same software update cadence issues seen on new platform launches. The 48V mild hybrid system adds an electrical layer that will need attention as vehicles age out of warranty.
