The LR4 / Discovery 4 Case

LR4 drawbacks: fuel economy is 14–16 mpg city in real-world Simi Valley driving. The interior is dated by 2025 standards — functional but not luxurious. The infotainment system is generation-old technology. Safety systems are basic compared to what Discovery 5 and newer models provide. And because it's now 9–15 years old, any LR4 you buy today will have accumulated some deferred maintenance history. The inspection and first-year ownership investment matters.

The Discovery 5 / L462 Case

The Discovery 5 (2017–present) represents a fundamental architecture change — from body-on-frame to the MLA aluminum monocoque platform. The result is a significantly lighter vehicle (300 lbs lighter than the LR4 despite similar dimensions), meaningfully better fuel economy (18–22 mpg), a dramatically more refined interior, and advanced safety systems. Terrain Response 2 is standard, the air suspension is a generation newer and more sophisticated, and the available Sd4 and Sd6 diesel engines offer LR4-comparable torque with diesel economy.

Our Recommendation

For buyers prioritizing low purchase price and who are comfortable with the mechanical ownership of a 10+ year old vehicle — a clean, inspected LR4 with documented service history is excellent value. You know what you're getting, the repair network is mature, and the V8 will deliver another 100,000 miles with correct maintenance. For buyers who want a newer vehicle with current safety systems, better fuel economy, and lower age-related risk — a 2020–2022 Discovery 5 Sd6 represents the better choice despite the higher purchase price. Budget the first-year inspection cost in either case. We do pre-purchase inspections at our Simi Valley shop for both models — call (805) 624-7576.
